Q: I have about 50 PW105M10U096 that we are monitoring using a production called energy options I need to make sure we are calculating amps correctly Can you tell me what the power factor is on these strips? Thanks!

Jack Gittleman, NY

A: Hello Jack, Power factor isn't determined by the power strip. Instead it is determined by your equipment that is consuming power. The amperage given by the ePDU is RMS amperage and can be multiplied by your RMS voltage to yield VA, or Volt-Amps. If the power factor or wattage are needed, you may need to have another device to monitor that value. Typically, UPSs measure both VA and wattage ratings. David DavidGWindsor@Eaton.com

Q: We currently have a EATON Power Xpert -9395 providing UPS functions to our building. This system is capable of having a SNMP card so we can monitor it over our network. Need to find the part number, source and if possible cost of the SNMP card

Robert Brenner, DOHA, FL

A: Hi Robert, The part number for the Power Expert Gateway card is 103007974-5591. There may be an even better option for your needs, so I recommend that you contact your local sales representative for pricing and availability (respond back to me if you do not know the sales rep company). Also, note that this card is supplied free if you select the included "e-Notify remote monitoring" service for your UPS. This allows us to monitor your UPS (via outbound email only), and send you monthly health reports, as well as remote service dispatch, whenever there is a significant UPS issue. e-Notify service is provided free for the first year of UPS operation. Your sales or service rep can provide more details or set up an installation if desired.

Q: I would like to know the noise level of the 5PX UPS line. I'm searching for a silent UPS in the 1500/2200VA range and being very interested in the 5PX2200iRT. I know that the fans are running at full speed (45dB) when working on batteries, but how is the noise level in normal condition, when there is AC power, full batteries and no overload ?

Mastaba A, IN

A: The noise level drops to 40dB when the fan is on low speed. dB levels are always funny. You can have a low dB but the fan can still be completely annoying because of the frequency it puts out. This fan noise is much more of a white noise vs. a high pitch fan. Typcially, this UPS is not something you would have under your desk. With that said I have had a 5PX1500RT under my desk and it uses the same fan as the 2200. You can definitely tell a difference when the UPS is on vs. off with the low fan speed but for me it was something I got use to.

Q: I have a 480v breaker on the bench looking to start primary injection. It is a series C 800 amp MDL. When I attempt to close it, it trips free. Is there any reason why I should not be able to manually close this breaker.

Patrick Engle, AK

A: Hi Patrick, Warning! this is a long response. Feel free to call us to get some personalized assistance --Ed Spears If there are any tripping accessories installed in the breaker that are powered at the improper time the breaker will not be able to be latched on. More on that later…here are some suggestions: v Troubleshooting via email is difficult so the first recommendation is to call the TRC between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM eastern time, Monday through Friday, to discuss the issue. The number to reach the TRC for molded case circuit breaker troubleshooting assistance is 877-386-2273, option 2, sub-option 1. Additional suggestions the customer can use to address the issue before calling: v What position is the breaker handle currently in? There are three positions: ON, TRIPPED (mid-position), and OFF. If the breaker handle is in the TRIPPED position it cannot be latched ON without first being latched OFF. The customer should try to latch the breaker handle in the OFF position and observe that the handle holds there. After latching OFF the handle should be able to be latched ON, provided there are no tripping accessories installed that aren’t powered in the incorrect sequence and, only if the breaker is built with electronic trip unit, a rating plug is installed. If the breaker is built with electronic trip unit and no rating plug is installed in the trip unit, the breaker cannot be turned ON. v Are there any light duty “tripping accessory” control wires exiting the side of the breaker? The control wire colors associated with tripping accessories are: Yellow/White = Shunt Trip Orange/Brown = Undervoltage Release Both tripping accessories are control voltage-powered devices. If either a shunt trip or an undervoltage release has voltage applied to its solenoid coil in the wrong sequence – at the wrong time - it induces a condition in the breaker called “breaker idle”. This condition essentially causes the breaker trip mechanism to fall off its latch, and can damage the tripping mechanism. This might manifest itself in the operator’s eyes as “the breaker handle trips free” when an attempt is made to turn the breaker handle ON. Shunt trip coils should be powered intermittently, only at the time when the breaker is required to trip OFF. Undervoltage release coils should be powered continuously; no attempt should be made to turn the breaker handle ON before first powering the undervoltage release coil.

Q: Your 9130RM 2U input cord is only 6ft long, which is too short. can I use a 15 ft extension cable? Do you have something like that?

Aaron Leung, Fremont, CA

A: Hi Aaron, Your problem is very common. Receptacles are often not ideally placed and it presents a challenge for IT. However, you need to be careful and work with your facilities manager or electrician to resolve this. In many if not most cases, the use of extension cables for UPSs in computer rooms is not allowed by National Electric Code. Regards, David

I am in Nigeria on a project and am on generator power at 50Hz with UPS set for 50Hz.What is my next step?

Q: Eaton 800 amp power distribution panel with all 3 phase breakers on the left side and 4 panel boards to the right. We are experiencing a dead short from B phase or Red to nuetral. This is a dimmer module lighting panel isolated to the B phase power bar or strip where the individual breakers are attatched. Is this common or a safety fault. Only the lighting panel board has the short. The other 3 are OK.

Ron Weaver, Pharr, TX

A: It definitely sounds like there is a fault or short in the dimmer module. Can it be isolated to verify that the short disappears with the module disconnected? Also, double check the wiring to ensure no one has inadvertently wired phase B to the neutral bar....

Q: I have an EX EXB and need to know the battery life.

Jefrey Harmer, Sarasota, FL

A: Typical battery life is in the 3-5 year range depending on conditions. Is your extended battery attached to a UPS? Has it been under charge or has it been sitting on a shelf. If it has been sitting on a shelf for over 9 months without a charge you will most likely need to replace it. Batteries do not like to sit without being charged for prolong periods of time.

Q: We want to configure a 9155 with and output isolation transformer 208 208 and be able to plug the equipment into L6-30 L6-15 and 5-20 outlets do you have some type of PDM or I/O cabinet with the Isolation transformer and outlets together Better yet do you have an external maintenance bypass cabinet or panel that has all this as well?

dan keeler, Bellevue, WA

A: Hi Dan, The standard 9155 sold in the USA is a "split phase" UPS, meaning the UPS processes L1, L2, N, and G in and out. You can think of the 9155 as having two rectifiers and two inverters - one for each phase. For this reason, a 9155 does not typically need a transformer for 120V output. The 9155 can run at 120/208 or 120/240 and simultaneously output 120V L-N and 208V L-L (or 240V L-L depending on site voltage). Most users save money and efficiency by not using the transformer option native to the 9155, which is an input transformer primarily used only for sites where a neutral does not exist. I would recommend reaching out to one of our inside sales engineers to go into more detail, but the receptacle and bypass output is achievable. They can be reached at 800-356-5794 option 2 or at InsideSalesEngineerUPS@eaton.com. Let me know if there are any further questions. Regards, David

Q: Do you offer a plug and play replacement to the powerware 5125 line? Most importantly, a male power receptacle. Need a 2200VA, 120V IN/120V out UPS. If you do not have a direct replacement, what's "considered" the replacement. Thanks

Doug Flaherty, WI

A: Doug, I'm assuming that you are talking about the 5125 Rackmount 2U product. If this is the case then you would want to consider the Eaton 5PX2200RT. www.eaton.com/5PX
If you have a full part number or can pick one of the following I could help you better. Q: I have an Eaton 3105 UPS. It has served very well up until last week, when we have a power failure or a blip the UPS doesn't keep the power continuously. It loses it for about 1 second and then it maintains it. Can you get me some ideas and also can I get a schematic for it. Thanks, Bob Weis

Bob Weis, SC

A: Bob, The Eaton 3105 is a Standby topology UPS. When there is a power outage or the power goes out of the acceptable range the 3105 will switch to battery. This transfer should be in the 8-10ms time range. Q: We have a small network environment that needs a new UPS strategy. Our main office has 4 physical servers and 4 ESX Hosts running vSphere 4 Enterprise. We were able to verify that a single 9355 is the correct size and have specified the Network card to be included, but I want to be sure we have the correct setup on shutdown software. The recommendations for IPP and IPM are a bit confusing. We need the software to shut down the ESX hosts as well as the physical servers in the event of a power outage without migrating servers. Shutting down the firewall and SAN (Dell Equallogic)would be nice too, but we have to power down the servers. Is this a job for IPP or IPM, and will the included 1-10 license cover us?

Randy Grein, Tacoma, WA

A: The 1-10 license will suffice.  We recommend installing IPM into vCenter and then configure your servers through IPM to shut down when required.  If you'd like additional information, feel free to contact your sales representative or 800.356.5794.

Q: I currently am working on the purchase of an Eaton PowerWare 9355 20 KVA UPS system. The proposed batteries are VRLA Emersys 12HX505. The weight of the lead acid batteries have created a problem. Is ther another battery technology that offers simular performance at a lighter weight?

Larry Summers, Denver, CO

A: Actually the alternative chemistry batteries (like lithium ion and NimH) are still not quite feasible for UPS applications. The cost remains very high, and there are still performance and safety issues that will need to be worked out. While any lead-calcium VRLA battery will work for the 9355 UPS, the reality is that all of the vendors will have approximately the same weight. We have found the Enersys batteries to have a smaller footprint than other vendors, but the weight is about the same---HEAVY. Perhaps Enersys can suggest an alternative cabinet layout that would spread out the weight.

Q: I have a Toshiba 1400SE ups I need to replace. Type: 6C1G2L02466T83HI 20 amp 240 Volt. What is your replacement item, plus pricing?

Danny Lewis, Purcell, OK

A: Danny, I believe the Toshiba 1400SE is an online UPS, about 2000VA, at 208 or 240V. The Eaton equivalent would be the 9130 2000VA G or i model. I'm not sure about which one in particular I am not familiar with Toshiba's input and output connections. Q: I'm looking for a user manual and brochure for old Best FC 3kVA UPS...believe this unit is line-interactive topology?

Jack Connor, Bensalem, PA

A: Hi Jack, The Ferrups is actually a unique topology called ferroresonnant - hence the unique name. Ferroresonnant is different than line interactive in several ways. The transformer is a true isolation type, it has great inherent properties for spike attenuation, and is apt to handle poor power environments unlike line interactive. The FC is a pretty old model. The best place to find a user manual is with our service department (we no longer have any of the Best FC sales documentation such as brochures). Q: We have a customer with a 5HP/ 3ph refer compressor and wants to support it thruogh small power blips with a UPS. What size unit should we offer??

Jack Frasier, Colorado Springs, CO

A: Hi Jack, A 5HP motor is going to be about 4.5kVA worth of continuous load. The motor presents a challenge to the UPS, however, because of the inrush current a motor requires during startup. The value of the inrush might be 3 to 4 x's continuous load (it could also be more or less for certain types of motors). The UPS needs to be sized not only for the continuous load, but also for the inrush. Based on those estimates, that puts to total motor inrush around 15kVA. I'd recommend a 20kVA UPS without knowing more details. If you can gather the inrush value from your motor, that would be the best way to make sure you aren't over-sizing your solution.

Q: My company recently purchased five Eaton 9130 1500va/1350w UPS units. When we installed them in cubicles and turned on, they became pretty loud from the backend fan unit. Is there a way to quiet the fan unit or is there another Eaton model that we should look at in purchasing that is equal in spec's to what we currently have and is quieter?

Greg Hernandez, Martinsburg, WV

A: Greg, The Eaton 9130's fan is going to be louder because it is a double online conversion UPS. Since this type of UPS is converting the AC power to DC power then back from DC to AC there is more heat created by this process and the fan's typically run a faster speed. I see you are in West Virginia so your power grid should be pretty good there. Most likely a line-interactive or standby UPS would be sufficient and much more affordable. What things are you hooking up to the UPS? Is this a basic desktop system then the lower end standby or line-interactive units would easily suffice. The line interactive do not protect from as many power problems but given the quality of your power grid you probably do not need all of them for your desktop situation. These also typically do not require a fan and when they do they typically run at different speeds depending on if you are on battery power or not. On battery they run faster. Standby would be the Eaton 3S. The line interactive could be either Eaton 5110 or Eaton 5115 or the Evolution Tower(depending on what you want from a feature set). Brian

Q: We currently have 6 Eaton 5130 UPSs installed in the bottom of our racks. We are installing overhead mesh racks to move power from the floor to overhead. We need an additional 4' of power cable. What do you suggest for a solution that is OSHA approved? Please advise! Thank you

Mike Galinat, Londonderry, NH

A: The easiest solution would be to put your UPS in the top of the rack to make up the distance. Otherwise, you are going to need to talk with a local electrician that can make recommendations specifically about your setup considering this is going to be a permanent installation.

Q: Foreseer is being installed at our Corporate sites. We are using in rack HP S132 PDU's. Our DC PDU's can read the utilization from the racks that are directly fed into them. However our new standard is to utilize Bus Ducts (A & B)that feed rows of racks from DC PDU's (1 &2). I thought I read a technical spec on Foreseer that it could communicate with an HP utility that can allow it to read the power utilization from a specific HP Server/device. Can I monitor individual servers with the HP utility and Foreseer in place in my environment? If so, what are the requirements? (Hardware/Software)

Erik Molina, Portland, OR

A: Hi Erik, That's a great question. Foreseer is a bit of a custom software where everything is tailored for your site and application. Personally, I have seen the HP utility but I haven't seen any detail about Foreseer pulling that information in. If you are working with someone at Eaton who is helping deploy Foreseer, that might be the best place to start. If you're not sure who that is, you can reach out to me directly. Q: Your Blackout Tracker is great, and I have a related question. Where can I get any published, and preferably unbiased data, on the probability of start-up for emergency or back-up generators following a blackout? DGs? Gas turbines? Up to and including 5 mW. I am a reliability/availability consultant and I have clients who are asking for it.

Bob Gauger, Irvine, CA

A: Hi Bob,
Real-life data on generators might be pretty difficult. I say that, because most manufacturers aren't going to publish their failure rates publicly. I'm not sure that there is a perfect avenue for you, but data center user groups such as Gartner or LinkedIN groups might be the best place to look.

Q:

Where can I find the schematics for a PW9125 1500?

Tom Cline, San Antonio, TX

A: Unfortunately as a manufacturer, we typically do not provide detailed schematics for our products. A primary reason for not publishing this information is to maintain the proprietary circuitry that resides in the UPS. If you are looking for a basic electrical diagram, or one-line drawing, we should be able to provide that even though the 9125 is an older, legacy product where documentation might be more limited. Our service team is the best place to reach out. They can be contacted at 800-356-5737.

Q: I need to buy a UPS, but I'm not sure how to go about selecting the right one for my business. How do I get started?

Pete Donahue, New York, NY

A: Great question. Defining the loads (what the UPS will support) is the best place to start picking the right UPS. Armed with this information, your minimum UPS requirements can usually be defined as:

  • Minimum UPS capacity required (VA/watts)
  • Voltage (usually 120 or 208 in North America)
  • Runtime (how long the UPS can run on battery)
  • UPS receptacles needed (standard wall outlets, computer style or other)
Once you answer these basic questions, you can define the level of technology you need from among the following three options:
  • Standby – basic UPS technology for PCs, kiosks and point-of-sale
  • Line Interactive – voltage-regulating UPS platforms for commercial applications to protect servers, switches, storage and general IT equipment
  • Online or Double Conversion – premium UPS protection for mission- critical applications, poor power environments and sensitive electrical equipment
Now you’re officially dangerous! For more information, you can talk to an Eaton representative at 800-356-5794 opt 2 opt 1, or get started on your own with the Eaton UPS Selector.

Q: I recently purchased a 9155, but I'm not running any software. Do you have a recommendation for monitoring?

Josh Townsend, Tulsa, OK

A: The best way to find the optimal monitoring solution for your needs is to check out our Intelligent Power Software Suite.

We offer a variety of options for communication, as noted below:

Single UPS – Webcard
A single UPS can usually be monitored through the optional network card. Our network cards are their own servers, so they record event history, send email and text message alerts, and provide remote access to real-time status. This is usually the best way to manage one UPS.

Shutdown – Webcard and IPP
If your UPS is protecting servers, you can use our software to schedule safe shutdowns and prevent data loss in the event of a prolonged power outage. For an Eaton UPS with a network card, Intelligent Power Protector (IPP) is the Eaton shutdown agent. It can communicate directly with the network interface card (or over USB and serial if needed) to register itself and receive alerts to initiate soft shutdown of your IT systems.

Multiple UPS installations – Webcards and IPM
For multiple UPSs spread out across a network closet, campus, or enterprise, Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) software is designed to aggregate and manage your power devices (both UPSs and network- enabled PDUs).

Virtualization – Webcard and IPM
IPM is the industry leader integrating power with virtualization platforms. IPM shutdown agent management enables safe shutdown of virtualized servers—even servers in clusters running vCenter or XenCenter. Live migrations can be triggered to transparently move virtual machines to an available server on the network, for data integrity and zero downtime.

Q: How do I set up the network card on my UPS?

Otha Cooper, Charleston, SC

A: Eaton has several network cards for different UPSs, so setup depends on your specific platform and card. Eaton’s webcards are hot-swappable, so installation is easy; each card ships with instructions to set the IP address, login password and other parameters. Those instructions can also be found on the connectivity portion of our website.

If you’re still having issues, our technical support team for software and connectivity support is available at 800-356-5737.

Q: Where can I find a manual for the 9120 3000VA?

Terrance Jackson, Casper, WY

A: Manuals from older, discontinued UPS models like the 9120 can be found on the legacy product page. If you have a legacy model without documentation, I’d recommend talking to tech support at 800-356-5737.

Eaton’s current UPS manuals are posted online on the product pages under the documentation tab

Q: I'm looking at several of the 9130 models. How do I know what plug my equipment has and what UPS and receptacle I need?

Diane Chase, Champaign, IL

A: If you can’t recognize your plugs, you can try matching them in our handy chart. Also, plugs (male) and receptacles (female) are often made with the name printed or molded onto the connector. If neither of those options works, you may find the information you need in the manufacturer’s specifications or data sheets.
